日本では、家の軒下に蜂の巣ができると「厄除け」や、「泥棒除け」、「火事除け」に良いと言われており、縁起物として玄関などに飾られることもあります。透かし紋様の六角を蜂の巣に見立てて、蜂を八匹描きました。日本語の数字の8は、末広がりに良い数字として有名です。
8の発音は、蜂の発音と同じで、日本語の言葉遊びにも掛けてデザインしました。

8 Bees

According to Japanese tradition, placing a beehive under the eaves of a house is thought to bring good luck, and protect your family against bad fortune, thieves, and fire.  Sometimes, a beehive is displayed at the entrance as a good-luck charm. I painted eight bees on a hexagonal openwork button, and used the pattern to represent honeycomb in a beehive.  Eight「八」 is a lucky number in Japanese because when you write it in kanji, the shape of the character becomes wider towards the bottom.
The pronunciation of “eight” is the same as that of “bee”, so the design is also inspired by a play on words in Japanese.
